Woodrose Winery
2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate(Texas)
Let me make one thing clear, right up front. Woodrose only has six cases of this wine left. An Austin liquor store tried to buy it all. Several restaurants wanted the entire inventory. I tried to buy a whole case and they wouldn’t let me.
Now that you know where we all stand, let me explain the excitement.
The Woodrose vineyard was babied from planting by a man who lost his livelihood and his marriage over the amount of time he spent in the winery. When he was stricken ill – in the vineyard – he was faced with having to sell the winery. Enter soft-spoken Mike Guillette, a high-tech guy with a little money and a big love of all things wine.
His best purchase, one that makes him look like a genius in retrospect, is this spectacular Cabernet. Don’t look for Rutherford Bench styled Cabernet. This is Texas wine, with powerful dark berry aromas and unbelievably soft and sweet tannins. The mouthfeel is closer to Bordeaux than Napa. This is a wine that should last for ten years.
Did I mention it costs $19?
