Wine Recommendation

Monte Volpe 2006 Pinot Grigio (Mendocino)

Monte Volpe

2006 Pinot Grigio
(Mendocino)

The terroir behind this wine is unusual: mostly it’s organically grown Pinot Gris from a hot part of central Mendocino, but a quarter comes from much cooler Anderson Valley, so the wine’s ripe and outgoing yet with a cool dense core of more tropical flavors. Greg Graziano is one of the county’s most experienced blenders, and he seems to have found a winning combination here that not everyone might try.

The aromas feature velvety honey and pears, laced with something spicy and tropical. The wine enters with a luscious sweetness, then expands into layers of fruit, spice, acid, nuttiness and more. Graziano managed to combine the alcohol that comes from ripe inland fruit with the zingy acidity that comes from cooler climes, so you get a firm structure that’s wrapped in plush pleasure. Well done.
