Wine Recommendation

Domaine Saint Gregory 2006 Pinot Blanc (Mendocino)

Domaine Saint Gregory

2006 Pinot Blanc
(Mendocino)

If Greg Graziano had wanted to, he could have adjusted this blend just 5 percent to produce a vineyard-designated wine. As it was, 90 percent of the fruit is Pinot Blanc from Jahnke Vineyard on Russian River in Ukiah Valley, a warm inland region of Mendocino County. Graziano, a master blender, liked the blend better with 10 percent of Chardonnay from one of his favorite vineyards, Arriguin, and so that’s what we get. The two grapes are similar enough in flavor profile that you’d never know there’s Chard in here, particularly after everything was barrel fermented and aged in French oak.

The opening aromas are well balanced and complementary: apples, peaches, and pineapple. In your mouth, the aromas continue as flavors but the wine immediately expands to add some suave, stony minerals on the bottom and rose essences and exotic spices on top. These elements get an corresponding development in the mouthfeel, as the wine enters fairly smooth but spreads on the palate to get almost nubbly. The finish really picks up the pineapple, both for sweetness and a refreshing snap of acidity.
