Bonny Doon Vineyard
2006 Albariño, Ca' del Solo Vineyard(Monterey County)
You’ve probably read about how Bonny Doon Vineyard has been cutting programs, changing management, and making other Big Changes. Quietly in the background, the winegrowing folks have completed converting the winery’s Ca’ del Solo vineyard in Salinas Valley to biodynamic viticulture, and the winemakers have produced a lovely wine to showcase it. That the grape is Albariño (along with even more exotic Loureiro and Treixadura, all natives of Portugal) makes this a doubly historic debut.
Don’t be surprised at the wine’s lack of color – Albariño grape skins don’t confer hardly any. Just sniff the sweet, nutty aromas of hazelnuts, marzipan, and clover honey, then sip them into your mouth as flavors. The wine is light in body but sizable in personality for a fresh young white; the sweetness holds gently but firmly along with well balanced acid, and there's some rosewater on the finish along with a bit of fresh citrus. Well done all around.
