Wine Recommendation

Wine:Soos Creek Wine Cellars 2004 Soleil (Columbia Valley)

Soos Creek Wine Cellars

2004 Soleil
(Columbia Valley)

Soos Creek winemaker Dave Larsen sources fruit from Washington state’s most impeccable vineyards in the Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope and Rattlesnake Hills appellations.

Two top Columbia Valley vineyards – Ciel du Cheval (Red Mountain AVA) and Champoux (Horse Heaven Hills AVA) – each contribute a half share to this Cabernet Sauvignon. The addition of 14% Cabernet Franc gives the wine a more open, lifted nose and broader appeal than its closed-up cousins -- 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon Ciel du Cheval Vineyard and 2004 Artist’s Series #4 Red Wine. Aromas are fairly bursting with detail – whiffs of herb, spice, mineral, violets and cinnamon. In the mouth the strawberry/cherry fruit is annotated with green tea, herb and soy. It’s a chewy wine, more herbal than funky, fascinating and complex, with an unusual flavor profile that seems bound to age well.

The Reviewer

Paul Gregutt

Paul Gregutt values these things in wine above all: typicity, specificity, clarity, elegance, polish, depth and balance. He recognizes that there are genuine flaws in some wines, and it is important to know and identify them. Wines that are too ripe, too oaky or alcoholic to the point where nuance and detail are obliterated are not going to win his praise. Price is a factor in his evaluation of any wine; a good $8 wine is much harder to make than a good $80 wine.
